Solid, hollow or gold-plated? Why some chains feel light
, 2 min read
Pick up two gold chains of the same length and width, and one may feel noticeably lighter. There is a reason for that, and it matters, because gold is priced by weight. The difference is how the chain is made.
Solid gold
Solid gold is gold all the way through, with no gaps. That makes it the heaviest for its size, so it costs the most per inch.
It is also the most durable. A solid chain resists dents, can be repaired more easily, and holds its value best over time, because nearly all of its weight is gold.
Hollow gold
Hollow gold is still real gold, formed into links with an empty core. Because there is less metal in each link, it is lighter and more affordable, which makes it a good way to wear a bigger, bolder design without the bigger price.
The trade-off is strength. Hollow links dent and crush more easily than solid ones, and they are harder to repair. When you sell or trade in a hollow piece, you are paid for the gold it contains, which is less than a solid piece of the same size.
Gold-plated
Gold-plated jewellery has a thin layer of gold over another metal underneath, such as brass or silver. It is the most accessible way to get the gold look, at the most accessible price.
Plating wears through with time, and most of what you are holding is the base metal, so plated pieces are not bought back at gold rates.
Know which one you are paying for
Before you buy, ask what construction a piece is, and check the weight and purity on the receipt. At Minora Jewels we will tell you exactly what construction any piece is. For what the purity numbers mean, read 916 or 999? Gold purity explained.
